Endotracheal intubation is a procedure by which a tube is inserted through the mouth down into the trachea (the large airway from the mouth to the lungs). Before surgery, this is often done under deep sedation. In emergency situations, the patient is often unconscious at the time of this procedure

An endotracheal tube with a balloon at one end that may be inflated to tighten the fit in the lumen of the airway. Theballoon forms a cuff that prevents gastric contents from passing into the lungs and gas from leaking back from the lungs.Both high-pressure and low-pressure cuffs are used. Overinflation of the cuff can cause contusion, hemorrhage, mucosalsloughing, or stenosis.
